A Sardinian Warbler in dense, thorny scrub in Tenerife, which is exactly its country: a Mediterranean and Macaronesian species of maquis and garrigue, from Portugal to Turkey and out to the Canaries, and one that rarely sits still for long, dropping into cover between short bursts of a fast, scratchy song.
A jet-black cap, white throat and a ring of bare red skin around the eye that no other warbler in the region shares. It is resident, not a migrant, and on the islands it sings all winter.
