San Giorgio Maggiore, through glass

San Giorgio Maggiore, through glass

Palladio's church across the basin, seen through a window of round bullseye panes.

Those discs are the leftovers of crown glass. Blown glass was spun flat into a disc, and the centre - where the blowpipe had been attached and the glass was thickest and least clear - was the offcut. Being cheap and structurally useful they were leaded into windows in their thousands, which is how the least transparent part of the process became the most recognisable thing about a Venetian window.

Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
