The little raised timber decks are altane, a Venetian fixture for several hundred years - roof platforms where laundry was dried and, famously, where women bleached their hair in the sun. They are still built, still used, and still the only outdoor space many of these houses have.
Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
