Rio de la Torre
Venice · 27 August 2023

A back canal barely wider than the boat, with a gondolier waiting on someone and a plastic runabout moored opposite - which is the honest version of the city. These are working streets.
The brick is exposed because the render has come off, and it comes off because of salt. Water is drawn up into the wall, evaporates, and leaves the salt behind to crystallise inside the masonry, which pushes the surface away. Every building here is slowly doing it.
Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
