Rimrock above the forest

Bare limestone caprock along a mesa edge, ponderosa forest running unbroken beneath it.
The pale rock capping these mesas is younger and harder than the red sandstone below, which is why it survives as a rim instead of eroding into slope the way the softer red layers do. Take the cap off and the mesa goes in a few thousand years.
