Range behind range, each paler than the one in front. That fading is aerial perspective, and it is atmosphere doing it: air scatters short wavelengths, so the further away a ridge is the more blue haze sits between you and it, and the less contrast survives. It is the oldest depth cue in landscape painting and the only one that works on a subject this size.
The Appalachians are old enough that this is what is left of them. They were once alpine, and several hundred million years of weather has worn them down to these.
