Layer upon layer of forested ridgeline fading from green-black in the foreground to pale blue at the horizon.
The haze that gives the range its name is real. The trees themselves produce it, releasing volatile compounds - isoprene, mostly - that scatter blue light the same way water vapour does, and on a warm still day the Blue Ridge is blue because the forest is breathing.
