Punting past the Westgate

The Great Stour runs along the outside of the old city wall here, with Westgate Towers - the last of Canterbury's seven medieval gatehouses still standing - closing off the view upstream.
Punting this stretch is a tourist trade now, but the boats themselves are a genuinely old way to move along a river too shallow and too fussy with weed for much else. The Westgate was built in the 1380s against a French invasion that never came, and spent most of its later life as the city gaol.
