Porte Cailhau
Bordeaux and the surrounding area · 9 May 2026

A late-Gothic city gate on the old riverfront of Bordeaux, its turrets and central spire more decorative than defensive by the time it was built in the 1490s.
It was raised to celebrate a French victory in Italy as much as to guard the port, and today opens straight onto one of the city's busiest pedestrian streets rather than anything resembling a fortification. The river it faces was, for three centuries, the road to England: Bordeaux was English from 1152 to 1453, and the wine trade never got over it.
Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
