Piazza San Marco

The Procuratie Vecchie, built to house the procurators who administered the basilica and its estates: fifty arches on the ground floor and a hundred above, running the whole north side of the square.

The repetition is the point. It sets a rhythm that the buildings on the other two sides were then obliged to answer, over a couple of centuries and by different architects, which is why a square assembled piecemeal reads as a single designed room. August, before nine, and the chairs are already out.

Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
