Pérouges

A fortified medieval town near Lyon, and one of the more complete survivals of its kind in France - cobbled in round river stone, timber-framed houses leaning into the square, all of it still lived in rather than preserved as a shell.

It came very close to not surviving at all. By the early twentieth century Pérouges was largely abandoned and slated for demolition. A local campaign saved it, and it has since become a favoured film location for exactly the reason it nearly vanished: almost nothing about it has been modernised.

Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
