Pena Palace clock tower

Looking straight up the stairway between the palace's yellow and red wings to the clock tower at the summit. The colours are original, or as near as restoration can get: the palace faded to grey through the twentieth century and was repainted in the 1990s to the scheme its builder, Ferdinand II, chose in the 1840s, which shocked people then and still does. The steepness does the rest of the architecture's work, making a hilltop feel like the top of something.
