Peaks beyond the rim

The snow-capped San Francisco Peaks set behind the sandstone rim rather than above the valley - two rock stories in one view, ancient seabed in the foreground and a volcano in the distance. The peaks are one mountain, the eroded stump of a stratovolcano that stood perhaps 16,000 feet before it blew or collapsed, and they are sacred to the Hopi, the Navajo and a dozen other nations independently of one another.

Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
