The Julian Alps are almost entirely carbonate rock - limestone and dolomite - laid down as sea floor and later folded up with the rest of the Alpine chain. That is what gives the range its pale, jagged look rather than the darker crystalline peaks further west: this is dissolved and fractured sedimentary rock, not granite.
