Formerly the private grounds of the Palacio de San Telmo, given to the city in 1893 and laid out as a public park by the French landscape architect Jean-Claude Nicolas Forestier ahead of the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition.
The trees are mostly orange and plane, planted in the long straight avenues Forestier favoured - a formal, almost French structure laid over a garden otherwise full of Moorish-revival tilework and fountains. That mix is the character of Seville's public spaces from this period.
