What look like petals are papery bracts, dry and stiff to the touch even on a living plant - the same trick as the strawflower, and the reason both keep their shape for years after cutting.
The dark ring inside the yellow centre is a target only partly meant for us. Many flowers carry patterns in ultraviolet that guide insects to the nectar, and a bee sees a good deal more of this one than we do. An Australian, like the strawflower, from the dry country where a flower that never wilts is a sensible thing to be.
