A pansy butterfly with the wings closed in the butterfly house at Carlsbad, a Junonia. The pansies are butterflies of open ground and forest edge across Asia and Africa, and the closest match here is the Chocolate Pansy of South and Southeast Asia, which sits with its wings shut on the forest floor and vanishes.
The underside is dull brown with wavy darker bands across both wings and a row of small eyespots along the hindwing margin, the pattern of a dead leaf. Several of the genus look much alike from below, and the upperside, which would settle it, isn't on view. Left at genus.
