Painted dhows, Lamu

Hulls painted in the same bright, unmatched palette up and down the beach, tyres slung as fenders, and a scatter of national flags run up more as decoration than declaration. These are the small local dhows, built on the island by eye rather than from plans, and the Lamu yards are among the last on the coast still building them - the skill has passed down through a handful of families, and the boats are still sewn and pegged as much as nailed.

Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
