An orb web spun between the dried seed heads of a spent coneflower in a Kent garden in November, visible at all only because condensation has beaded every strand. The orb-weavers are spiders of every hedge and border in Britain, and autumn is their season, when the females are full-grown and the webs are at their biggest.
On a dry night the same web would be next to impossible to see from a few feet away. Orb-weavers commonly eat their own web and rebuild it from scratch each day, recycling the silk protein rather than leaving the old strands to waste. A web this complete and evenly tensioned is usually only hours old.
