Mid-May, with the leaves not yet full size and the whole architecture of the tree still readable through them.
The heavy horizontal limbs are what an oak does when it grows in the open. In a forest it would run straight up competing for light; standing alone it spends its growth going outwards instead, which is why an open-grown oak ends up wider than it is tall.
