Spain's highest peak and, measured from the seafloor rather than sea level, one of the tallest volcanoes on Earth - a light dusting of snow still holding on the upper slopes in April, with the caldera's own broken rock formations filling the foreground.
The last eruption was in 1909, on a flank vent; the summit last went in 1798. The Guanches, the island's original people, believed it held up the sky and kept the devil inside it, which was not a bad reading of a volcano.
