Mount Longonot crater
Mount Longonot · 20 February 2024

The rim trail comes out here after a steep climb through open grassland, and the forest inside the caldera is the reward for it - a couple of square miles of it, self-seeded on the crater floor and walled in on every side by the cliffs of the rim.
Longonot is still classed as active, though nothing on this visit suggested it. The last eruption was around 1860, and steam still rises from vents on the crater floor in the cool of the morning.
Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
