Love-in-a-mist
Nigella damascena
Love-in-a-mist · Goodnestone · 1 June 2024

The mist is the plant's own foliage, threadlike and finely divided, showing up around and even through the flower itself.
An old cottage-garden annual, and one that seeds itself around freely enough that a single sowing tends to keep coming back. The seed pods that follow are as good as the flowers - inflated, striped and horned - and the seeds inside are the nigella of Indian cooking, or near enough.
Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
