Looking toward the church

A mown path down the middle of a double herbaceous border, roses trained over an arch at the far end, and the parish church tower closing the view beyond the garden wall. The double border is a Victorian idea, made famous by Gertrude Jekyll: two long beds facing each other across a path, planted so that the colour builds from cool to hot and back again as you walk. It is the most labour a garden can ask for per yard, and this one is at its peak in the first week of June.
