A longhorn beetle on the redwood forest floor in April, antennae longer than the entire body and held out wide rather than folded back - the defining trait of the family. Longhorns live wherever there is dead wood for the larvae, and a redwood forest floor has no shortage of it.
A huge family whose larvae mostly feed inside dead or dying wood. Some take years to reach adulthood inside a log, and there are records of them emerging from furniture decades after the tree was cut.
