Lamu donkey
Lamu · 17 February 2024

A chain halter, a saddle blanket rolled back off its haunches, and a wall painted the pink and yellow that turns up all over the old town. With no cars on the island a donkey is transport rather than livestock, and there are said to be more of them than people. The Lamu donkey is its own small, tough breed, and the island has a sanctuary, British-run since the 1980s, for the ones worn out by the work.
Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
