Jerónimos, from the upper cloister

The cloister from its upper gallery, with the domed lantern of the church crossing above the roofline - two storeys of tracery so dense the stone reads as lace. It is limestone from Lisbon's own quarries, soft enough to carve like this and hardening with age, and the whole monastery survived the 1755 earthquake that flattened most of the city, which was taken at the time as something close to a miracle.
