Simple five-petalled flowers in magenta-pink around a bright yellow boss of stamens, blooming into autumn once most of the rest of the border has finished.
Despite the name, a plant native to China rather than Japan, introduced to Japanese gardens early enough that the misnomer stuck in the West. Robert Fortune found it growing on graves in Shanghai in 1844 and sent it to England, where it has been the flower of September ever since.
