Ironwork window surrounds, Savannah

Cast-iron balconies and window surrounds gone rust-orange against pink stucco.

Savannah's historic district runs heavily to this combination, ironwork imported or copied from New Orleans and Charleston in the decades after the city's antebellum cotton wealth had somewhere to spend itself. Cast iron was the first mass-produced ornament: the patterns came from a catalogue, and the same balcony can be found on three continents.

Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
