Ice at dawn

Ice on a summit rock in the second week of October, with the valley still in full autumn colour behind it. The two are only a few hundred metres apart vertically.
The tops here get their first freeze weeks before anything below, and the exposed summits of the Whites keep some of the worst weather recorded anywhere in the world. The wind speed record stood on Mount Washington for over sixty years: 231 miles an hour, in April 1934.
