Hot spring

A small spring boiling in its own basin, with the orange mat of the runoff channel behind. The white is sinter - silica, dissolved out of rhyolite deep underground by superheated water and dropped again the moment the water cools at the surface. It builds the rim the spring sits in, so a pool like this slowly constructs its own container.
The orange is life. Thermophilic bacteria and archaea, colour-graded by temperature: the hottest water is sterile and blue, and the cooler it gets the more the mats shift through yellow, orange and finally brown.
