Hidden Valley

The rock is monzogranite, intruded as magma around 100 million years ago and exposed since by the slow stripping-away of everything that sat on top of it. Weathering works fastest along the joints, rounding the blocks between them, which is why the whole park reads as piles of enormous boulders rather than a single mountain.
Pinyon pine on the right, yucca in the foreground: the two plants that mark the boundary here between the low Colorado Desert and the higher, slightly wetter Mojave.
