A Halloween Pennant at the very top of a grass stem in the meadow on Staten Island, wings held out flat rather than folded, which is how it perches and how it got the name pennant. It is a dragonfly of sunny meadow and marsh edge across the eastern United States, never far from the ponds it breeds in.
Orange wings banded in dark brown give this species its name, and the perching habit makes it easy to pick out even at a distance. It flies in wind and rain that keep every other dragonfly grounded.
