Green, gold and red at once
Poconos · 19 October 2024

Straight up into three stages of the turn in one frame - green still holding, gold fully committed, red already there. The gold was in the leaf all summer, hidden under the chlorophyll; the red is made fresh in the last weeks, at some cost to the tree, and nobody has settled why. The best guess is that it shades the leaf while the tree pulls the last of the nitrogen back into the branches before letting go.
Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
