Two spikes at slightly different heights, the rest of the drift dissolved into soft colour behind them. Grape hyacinths naturalise readily once planted, spreading by seed and by offset bulbs until a modest planting turns into a dense stand within a few years. The topmost flowers on each spike are sterile, paler and there purely to catch the eye - a bee's eye - and the fertile ones are the darker bells below them.
