Water leaving the spring and spreading out across the flat, dropping in temperature as it goes.
The colours come from carotenoids, the same class of pigment that makes carrots orange. The bacteria produce more of them in summer, when there is more light to protect against, so the mats are at their most saturated exactly now and go greener over winter. The ridged grey-brown at the bottom is sinter again, being laid down as fast as the water can shed it.
