Grand Prismatic, the edge
Yellowstone · 10 August 2021

The largest hot spring in the country, and effectively a temperature map drawn in living organisms.
The blue centre is close to boiling and almost sterile. That colour is the water itself, scattering light, exactly as deep sea water does. Everything ringing it is microbial, and each band is a community that can tolerate one particular range of temperature and no other: green and yellow for the hotter margins, orange and rust as it cools outwards.
Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
