Gondola on the Grand Canal
Venice · 28 August 2023

The forcola, the carved oarlock, is shaped to one gondolier's own height and stroke, not a standard fitting, and takes a specialist maker months to shape. Fewer than a handful of workshops in Venice still make them.
A gondola itself is asymmetric for a reason. It is built slightly wider on the left than the right, with a permanent lean in the hull, to counteract the fact that the gondolier stands and rows from the stern on the right-hand side. Without the asymmetry the boat would pull steadily off a straight line.
Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
