Coral-pink petals around a dark boss of stamens and unripe carpels - a geum, in the rose family, grown for exactly this saturated colour over a long season. The wild parent is the water avens of damp British meadows, a nodding, dusky-pink thing, and the garden forms are mostly crosses with a scarlet Chilean species; the roots of the wild plant smell of cloves and were used to flavour ale.
