A few hundred yards further up the trail, the canopy thinning enough to let real blue sky through instead of glow, with a few green holdouts on the right marking the trees running later than the rest. The laggards are usually oaks. Oak leaves turn last and hang on longest, well into November, and a young oak may keep its dead brown leaves right through the winter.
