Foliage below the ridge

The pale cliff band of the Shawangunks as backdrop, with a single red maple standing out from the surrounding orange and gold - one tree further along in the turn than everything around it, for reasons of species, soil or timing that are rarely obvious from a distance. Red maple is the most variable tree in the eastern woods for exactly this: two trees side by side can turn a fortnight apart, and one can go scarlet while its neighbour goes yellow.
