A daisy-family flower catching a rare patch of direct sun on the forest floor. The many narrow rays, the ring of large five-pointed disc florets opening from the outside in and the green knot of unopened ones at the centre are the make-up of a calendula.
The likeliest one growing wild in coastal California in April is the field marigold, a Mediterranean weed naturalised along roadsides and clearings up and down the state. A pot marigold escaped from a garden would look much the same, so genus is as far as I'd take it.
