Dew on a flower barely a centimetre across. The yellow blotch and the fine purple veins are landing signals, pointing a bee straight down the throat of the flower to the nectar.
Eyebright is a partial parasite. It photosynthesises like any plant, but it also taps the roots of nearby grasses for water and minerals, which is why it thrives in poor turf where richer plants would crowd it out. The name comes from a mediaeval belief that it cured failing sight, on the reasoning that the marked flower resembles a bloodshot eye.
