European Robin

A European Robin on lichen-hung pine in the high forest of Tenerife, where the island has its own robin subspecies, generally read as slightly richer and more saturated in colour than the mainland bird familiar from British gardens. It shares the forest with the endemic chaffinch and sings from the same branches.

The robin of the Canaries has been isolated long enough that some authorities treat it as a species in its own right. The song is the same, and so is the temper: a robin will fight another robin to the death over a territory, and the red breast is the trigger.

Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
