An Eastern Kingbird watching from a willow over the marsh on Staten Island, a flycatcher of open country and water edges across the eastern two thirds of the continent, and a bird that spends the winter in the Amazon eating fruit.
Black above, sharply white below, with a white band across the tip of an otherwise black tail - about as crisp a field mark as any flycatcher offers. Kingbirds are notably aggressive for their size, chasing hawks and crows well out of their territory, though this one is simply watching rather than defending anything.
