Dune du Pilat
Bordeaux and the surrounding area · 9 May 2026

Europe's tallest sand dune, a wall of pale sand pushed up against a pine forest it is slowly, permanently burying.
The dune migrates inland several metres most years, driven by the prevailing Atlantic wind, and has swallowed parts of the forest below it more than once within recorded history. It is over a hundred metres high and still growing, and the pines behind it were planted in the nineteenth century to stop the sand, which they have not.
Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
