A wildflower of the coastal redwood belt, growing on the forest floor and along the clearings where enough light gets through.
The dark veining and white signal patch on the fall petal exist to steer a pollinator's landing straight toward the nectar. Named for David Douglas, the Scottish collector who walked most of the Pacific Northwest in the 1820s and gave his name to the fir as well.
