Cypress swamp

Bald cypress hung with Spanish moss, which is not a moss at all but a bromeliad, a relative of the pineapple. It takes nothing from the tree, drawing its water and nutrients straight from the air and rain.
February, so the cypresses are bare and the red haze in the canopy is red maple in flower, one of the earliest trees to bloom in the southern swamps, often while the water is still cold. Bald cypress is among the few conifers that drop their needles in winter, which is where the "bald" comes from.
