Cypress knees, close up

The buttressed, fluted base of a bald cypress from close enough to read as architecture rather than bark. What looks almost like a doorway is simply where the tree has grown around itself.
The knees, the woody knobs that rise from the roots around a cypress, are still debated. The leading theories are structural support in soft soil and gas exchange for roots sitting in standing water, and it may well be both.
