Lamu Old Town has no cars. The streets were laid out for foot and hoof centuries before the combustion engine, and they have stayed too narrow to widen since. Building stone still moves through them the way it always has: coral rag, cut from the reef, roped onto a donkey's back.
Lamu is said to have more donkeys than people. Most are working animals rather than pets, and a British-run sanctuary on the island exists mainly to look after the ones whose work has worn them out.
